U’s v Weymouth (29/10/05)

Goals:
0-1 – A terrible start for United as Weymouth score within four minutes. A long throw from the right falls to Lee Elam and he slots into the bottom left corner.
0-2 – Two minutes before half-time Weymouth break down the middle of the pitch and Kirk Jackson knocked it past Phil Wilson, despite Sutton’s ‘keeper getting a hand to it.
1-2 – The U’s get back in the game a minute after the interval as Eddie Akuamoah crosses from the left and Craig Watkins knees the ball in from within the six yard box.
1-3 – As Sutton pushed for a leveller, Weymouth picked up a free kick twenty yards out in the final minute and Matt Bound’s low strike deflects off the end of the wall and into the bottom right corner.

Sutton’s Best Move: At one-nil down, Ryan Palmer curves a ball out to the wing with the outside of his right foot. Matt Gray takes two touches then whips an excellent ball into the area that flashes past Luke Cornwall and Danny Ekoku on the edge of the six yard box to Craig Watkins at the back post but, slightly stretching, his effort flashes narrowly over the bar.

You don’t know what you’re doing: The referee takes no action after a Weymouth player kicks out in retaliation to a bad challenge by John Scarborough. Scarborough is booked.

Fans on song: United’s fans won the prizes for best chant, taunting the Weymouth fans with multiple renditions of “You’re only here for the tickets” – Tickets to Weymouth’s FA Cup trip to Nottingham Forest went on sale after the game. The chant was proved to be close to the truth as the home fans started disappearing from the terraces with fifteen minutes still to go.

Biggest Attendance: The game was watched by 1,703, the highest attendance in the Nationwide South this season.

Current Form is… Not too shabby. Sutton lost and conceded for the first time in three games.
Last six: WLLWWL: Scored 9, Conceded 6.

Next for the U’s: Lewes visit the Lane in the Nationwide South. Last season this fixture finished 5-3 to Lewes as Sutton dropped into the relegation zone with a poor defensive performance. John Scarborough and Joff Vansittart (2) scored for the U’s. Match Report

Team: Wilson, Palmer, Gonsalves, Scarborough, Watkins, Quinton, Gray, Honey, Cornwall, Ekoku, Akuamoah. Subs (n/u) Adams, Elliott, Rivers.
