2005/06 MATCH REPORTS

2005/06 Reports:
U’s v Thurrock (03/12/05)

Goals:
1-0 – New signing Michael Gordon spins away from two defenders and crosses from the right to Eddie Akuamoah who shoots on the turn into the bottom right corner (18 mins).
1-1 – Thurrock break into the right side of the area and Mark Janney slots the ball past Phil Wilson (28 mins).
1-2 – Seven minutes after the interval the hosts take the lead with a defensively soft goal as the ball is worked to Garry Cross on the edge of the area and he had enough space to poke the ball in (52 mins).
1-3 – The game looks over after 68 minutes when a low cross from the right wing is flicked home by Richard Goddard (68 mins).
1-4 – With eleven minutes left, Sutton are unfortunate to concede a fourth and there’s nothing that Wilson can do as Cross’s shot deflects off John Scarborough in the opposite direction from Wilson’s dive (79 mins).
2-4 – Sutton pull a goal back when a Thurrock defender is adjudged to have pulled back Scarborough inside the area and Matt Gray tucks the spot kick into the bottom left corner (84 mins).
2-5 – Thurrock get a fifth in embarrassingly easy fashion when a long punt up field by the goalkeeper falls for Goddard and he lobs the ball over Wilson (89 mins).
3-5 – Three minutes into injury time, the U’s reduce the deficit again when a cross is handled inside the box and Gray, reliable as ever from twelve yards, places the penalty in exactly the same spot as his first kick (90 mins).

All Change: John Rains rang the changes for the game, bringing new signings Michael Gordon and Jay Conroy into a starting eleven that lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with Matt Gray and Eddie Akuamoah as the strikers.

No Marching Orders for Scarborough: With sixty-five minutes gone, the referee decided harshly that Scarborough had fouled a Thurrock striker inside the box. But, as obviously the last man, Scarborough was lucky to escape with only a yellow card. Phil Wilson then produced a spectacular save from the spot kick, diving to his right to deflect the ball away with his forearm.

Blue and White Army: Bizarrely, the U’s played the first half in their chocolate and amber home shirts despite Thurrock’s shirts being yellow. With the evident kit-clash, Sutton played the second half in Thurrock’s blue and white away shirts.

Current Form is… Very poor – No win now in seven games, the U’s went the whole of November without picking up a win and that run now threatens to extend into December.
LLDDLL: Scored 7, Conceded 16.

Next for the U’s: United are at home on Tuesday night against Chipstead in the Surrey Senior Cup, a game in which the U’s simply must get back to winning ways.

Team: Wilson, Palmer, Gonsalves, Scarborough, Conroy, Quinton, Gray, Honey, Gordon (Chaaban), Douglas (Cornwall), Akuamoah. Subs (n/u) Castledine, Fear.

U’s v Chipstead, Surrey Senior Cup (07/12/05)

Goals:
0-1 – On the stroke of half-time, Tony Quinton kicks the heels of a Chipstead forward right on the edge of the area and the referee points to the spot. Mangus Rose slotted the penalty home to give the visitors the lead (45 mins).
1-1 – The U’s are level two minutes after the interval as Matt Gray spreads the play wide to Steve Douglas on the left and his low, drilled cross is slid in at the back post by Peter Fear (47 mins).
2-1 – Douglas is fouled on the left and Gray strikes a low dead-ball to the near post where Fear times his run perfectly to flick the ball between the ‘keeper and the upright for his second of the game (60 mins).
2-2 – The Combined Counties side equalise in simplistic fashion, Joe Garner side-footing home from a low, left-wing corner (71 mins).
2-3 – Deep into injury time United throw away any chance of cup progress this season when Chipstead break into the right side of the area and the ball is cut back for Tim Moffitt to sweep home (90 mins).

United lose to ten men: The dismal defeat was made worse by the fact that Chipstead played the final fifteen minutes with only ten men after their centre-back earned a second yellow card for dissent.

Spot on, Chipstead: Mangus Rose’s successful penalty was the first time Phil Wilson had been beaten from twelve yards this season. He saved penalties in the league games against Basingstoke and Thurrock.

Missed Opportunities: The U’s squandered two glorious chances to score, one in each half. Michael Gordon was onto the ball in a flash to steam past the defence after a poor headed clearance but shot across the ‘keeper and wide of goal after half an hour. Steve Douglas was guiltier, shooting wide from ten yards with the ‘keeper standing on his line, albeit under challenge from a defender.

Current Form is… Cringeworthy – Without a win in eight games, a run which includes a draw and two defeats against lower league opposition.
LDDLLL: Scored 8, Conceded 14.
