2006/07 MATCH REPORTS

2006/07 Reports:
U’s v Yeading (02/09/06)

Final score: 1-3

Still looking for their first home win of the season the U's got off on the right foot. A superb pass from Carl Gibbs cut through the Yeading back line to find Richard Harris who calmly slotted home. Up to then Yeading had barely troubled Sutton's defence, however the visitors suddenly found an extra gear and started to turn it around. The U's defence then seemed to go to sleep allowing Yeading to score a header from a corner, from an under hit back pass and a back post tap in, all before half time. The second half saw Sutton have a handful of chances to at least pull one back, but no one could hit the target.

U’s v Eastleigh (09/09/06)

Final score: 0-1

After conceding early on the U's were always trying hard to forge any chances in front of goal. The second half saw the best of the chances denied by the angle, Wayne Shaw's legs and the inability of the ref to spot a cast iron penalty.

U’s v Weston-super-Mare (12/09/06)

Final score: 3-1

Again the U's conceded an early goal, but with an all new strike partnership of the two on-loan players, Ross Gaynor and Charlie Ide, there was still a confident buzz about the team. United then started playing football, shocking I know but true. With the midfield linking up well with the young strikers it really did seem like it would only be a matter of time before we scored. Gaynor's first came after a mazy run from Ide whose shot was poorly dealt with by Weston's 'keeper. The rebound fell kindly for Gaynor who didn't hesitate to capitalise on the opportunity. The second came from a training ground set piece a yard or two outside the box. Gaynor ran over the ball only for Michael Johnson to roll the ball for Gaynor to ferociously strike into the top right corner. To make it harder for the visitors they were reduced to ten men just before the break after one of their forwards received his second yellow card for a late challenge on Paul Honey. Sutton came in at the break 2-1 to the good and that was after not being given a penalty for a push on Ide and two disallowed goals!

After the break it was only the Weston 'keeper who kept the score line respectable. Gaynor eventually rounded off his debut with a hat-trick as the U's continued to pepper the Weston goal. Chances for Ide and Michael Johnson in particular were superbly saved by Ryan Northmore. With the game heading into the last 5 minutes Weston were handed a penalty and could've made the scoreline look a lot closer than it deserved to be. However Clint Davies' right upright had other ideas and the penalty hit the base of the right post and was eventually put out of play. A superb performance gave the U's their first home win of the season and another cult hero.

Team: C Davies, R Palmer (S Broad), J Scarborough, L Gonsalves, E Akuamoah, P Fear (R Crockford), M Gray, P Honey, C Ide, R Gaynor, M Johnson (C Gibbs). Subs (not used): P Wilson, R Harris

U’s v Welling (16/09/06)

Final score: 0-1

After having the best of the chances in the first half the yellows conceded within minutes of the start of the second. Once again the U's then found themselves unable to create chances in front of goal. And even when a Welling defender blatantly bundled over Charlie Ide in the box the comedy pairing of ref and linesman did nothing. Ultimately a game where Sutton will look back and wish the chances in the first half had been taken.

Team: P Wilson, R Palmer, J Scarborough, L Gonsalves, E Akuamoah, P Fear (C Gibbs), M Gray, P Honey, C Ide, R Gaynor (R Harris), M Johnson. Subs (not used): L Naughton, S Broad, S Clayton

Goals: -

Welling: J Turner, M Goodfellow, L Solomon (J Guest), D Boateng, C Moore, B Lewis, M Bodkin (R Benjamin), D Kedwell, S Perkins (A Edusei), E Green, J Day. Subs (not used): K Rowland, P Hyde

U’s v Lewes (23/09/06)

Final score: 0-2

Cheated! That one word sums up how every supporter and player felt after today's game.

A great save by Phil Wilson kept it at 0-0 just minutes after the kick off. Lewes then applied more pressure on the U's and at this point looked like they were going to walk the match, this was not the case though. After about 15 minutes of play things just suddenly seemed to click, Matt Gray returned from his holiday and was suddenly whipping in crosses and beating players like we know he can. Charlie Ide and Ross Gaynor were making a nuisance of themselves and generally the level of play picked up significantly. Then just before half time came the talking point of the match. Ide cuts into the box on the right hand side, pushes it in front of himself, and a Lewes player chops him down. Possibility the clearest cut penalty since, the push at Welling, the push at Eastleigh, the handball in the box by Yeading and the handball in the box by Fisher. What have we got to do to get a penalty given?

After the break the linesman was once again involved, this time in the build up to Lewes's first goal. Ide had challenged shoulder to shoulder with a defender, who just happened to be about a foot taller than him but who went down easier than a tonne of bricks, and was adjudged to have fouled him. From the resulting free kick Lewes got the ball up field and proceeded to go one up. The U's also had 2 goals disallowed. Firstly, after claiming a cross Lewes's 'keeper couldn't stay on his feet in the six yard box and proceeded to fall into his own net and secondly Richard Harris's header from close range was apparently off side. A truly unbelievable display by the Ref, who showed no consistency in his bookings, and the Linesman that couldn't spot a penalty if it got up and hit him over the head with an over-sized comedy frying pan.

Team: P Wilson, R Palmer, S Broad, L Gonsalves, E Akuamoah, P Fear (R Harris), M Gray, P Honey, C Ide, R Gaynor (C Gibbs), M Johnson. Subs (not used): L Naughton, S Clayton, B Duke

Goals: -

Lewes: P Wilkerson, S Robinson, D Pereptuini (K Beckford), L Legge, I Simpemba, S Wormull (J Kadi), A Drury, G Holloway, J Cade (J-M Sigere), P Booth, D Duncan. Subs (not used): A Storey, L Hall

U’s v Bishops Stortford (30/09/06)

Final score: 1-3

Once again the U's fall out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle. After going behind in the 41st minute it took another two Stortford goals before the Yellows decided to turn up. A Ross Gaynor shot that was deflected in off of Peter Fear was all the fans had to cheer about. The game eventually ended 10 a side as both Roy Essendouh and Zak Graham were sent off for separate incidents in the last 5 minutes.

Team: L Naughton, R Palmer, N Lampton, L Gonsalves, E Akuamoah, P Fear, M Gray, P Honey (Z Graham), R Gaynor, R Harris (C Gibbs), M Johnson. Subs (not used): M Maan, S Clayton, B Duke
