2008/09 MATCH REPORTS

2008/09 Reports:
U’s v Wealdstone (02/09/08)

Final score: 0-4

After a first half, which was fairly equal and in which the U's may have felt hard done by to have a goal disallowed, things went drastically wrong in the second. From the off Wealdstone looked like a different team and the U's just couldn't find the key to unlock the door. Four goals later, without really even troubling the Wealdstone 'keeper, the U's drudged off the field and will have to pick up the pieces for the away trip to Horsham at the weekend.

Team: P Nicholls, J Smith (S West), K El-Salahi, C Collins, A Bray, G Heeroo (A Wilde), D Smith, D Palmer, K Murray, C Dundas (C Eribenne), G McCallum. Subs (not used): S McKimm, M Hann.

Wealdstone: S Thomas, M McCoy, A Massey, J Gray, Carl Martin, R Ashe, K Forbes, D Hicks, Callum Martin, S Hughes, L Chappell. Subs (not used): C O'Leary, G Burrell, D Quaye, N Salapatas, B Clarke.

U’s v Horsham (06/09/08)

Final score: 2-1

The U's travelled to Worthing, the temporary home of Horsham, in the hope of bouncing back from Tuesday's demolition. The first half was an even affair although Paul Nicholls was probably tested a little more than the home 'keeper. The U's started the second period brightly and a well weighted pass from Gavin McCallum let Adam Wilde bear down on the goalie and then delicately lift the ball over him in to the net. Horsham managed to get on level terms when the ball went straight in from a corner, although the blustery conditions could probably claim a hand in helping it in. The Hornets then had a good stint of possession but Nicholls was on hand again to deny them several times. Things turned Sutton's way when Craig Dundas was brought on in the centre of midfield. Dundas crafted the injury time U's winner when he produced a trademark run in to the box allowing him to pull the ball back for Gavin McCallum to finish from close range.

Team: P Nicholls, J Smith, K El-Salahi, C Collins, A Bray, M Hann, D Palmer (C Dundas), K Murray, C Eribenne, G McCallum (S West), A Wilde (D Smith). Subs (not used): D Bracken, S McKimm.

Goals: Wilde (58), McCallum (90)

Horsham: P Seuke, J Page, R Eldridge, A Howard, S Page, L Carney, J Mingle (S Graham), L Carey, E Archibald (L Baitup), Mark Knee (L Farrell), G Charman. Subs (not used): I Payne, R Frankland.

Goals: Carey (70)

U’s v Staines Town (09/09/08)

Final score: 1-1

Following on from the injury time win against Horsham, the U's were looking to take three points off another team that are above them in the league. The first half was predominantly controlled by the U's and their possession was rewarded when Gavin McCallum popped up in the box to head in from close range. The second half saw Staines come back in to the match and eventually saw them level when they managed to head home from a free-kick. However whilst Staines had most of the ball in the second period, the U's had the better chances and on two separate occasions McCallum probably should have added to his tally. A draw however was probably a fair result.

Team: P Nicholls, J Smith, K El-Salahi, C Collins, A Bray, D Palmer (C Dundas), K Murray, M Hann, C Eribenne (S West), G McCallum, A Wilde (D Smith). Subs (not used): S McKimm, D Bracken.

Goals: McCallum (30)

U’s v Cray Wanderers, FA Cup 1QR (13/09/08)

Final score: 3-1

The U's got their FA Cup campaign off on the right foot with a comfortable win against lower league opposition. Gavin McCallum gave Sutton the lead when he raced clear of his marker and then lifted the ball over the Cray 'keeper. Wanderers however where soon level when a cross from the left winger was met by an unmarked striker, whose header gave Paul Nicholls no chance. The U's restored their lead after Steve West pounced on the ball as it came back off the post from Adam Wilde's free-kick. In the second half Craig Dundas finally got his first goal of the season as he headed in Wilde's perfectly delivered corner. Both teams could have added to their tallies in the last five minutes as Cray hit the bar and McCallum fired over from close range after some excellent work on the right by Delando Smith.

Team: P Nicholls, J Smith (S McKimm), S West, C Collins, A Bray, M Hann, G Heeroo, K Murray, G McCallum, C Dundas (B Dunn), A Wilde (D Smith). Subs (not used): D Bracken, T Kavanagh.

U’s v Canvey Island (20/09/08)

Final score: 1-0

The U's finally returned to the familiar amber with chocolate trim and did so with an 87th minute winner. Throughout the game Canvey never really challenged Paul Nicholls and the closest they came was when an unmarked Gulls player blasted over an empty net. The first half saw Gavins McCallum and Heeroo have an effort from 6 yards out tipped on to the bar and a goal bound shot headed away. The Yellows thought they'd taken a second half lead when McCallum tapped in Karim El-Salahi's shot, but McCallum Was adjudged to have been offside. McCallum made amends for that late on when he turned provider and sent in a perfect cross which was met by Billy Dunn. Dunn, whose shot was initially parried, jumped on the rebound and proceeded to net his first senior goal.

Team: P Nicholls, J Smith (S McKimm), S West, C Collins, A Bray, M Hann (D Smith), G Heeroo, K Murray, G McCallum, C Dundas, A Wilde (B Dunn). Subs (not used): D Bracken, D Palmer.

U’s v Billericay Town (23/09/08)

Final score: 0-1

The U's took on Billericay and ultimately failed to trouble the 'Ricay goalkeeper. Whilst Sutton probably had the better of the possession no amount of being on the ball could be converted in to chances. Billericay controversially scored after a striker blatantly blocked Paul Nicholls drop kick and then passed across the goal for his team mate to score. Needless to say the U's were furious but the Ref was clueless. 'Ricay also had the best chances in the second half but Nicholls bravely saved with his legs at the feet of a striker and also used his legs to save a rather dubious penalty. The U's did bombard the Billericay box for the last ten minutes but could not find a way through.

Team: P Nicholls, J Smith, K El-Salahi, C Collins, A Bray, G Heeroo, K Murray, M Hann (D Smith), C Dundas (S West), G McCallum, A Wilde (B Dunn). Subs (not used): S McKimm, D Palmer.

U’s v Billericay Town, FAC (27/09/08)

Final score: 3-1

The U's put themselves into the hat for the next round of the FA Cup with an excellent second half performance against the team that had beaten them midweek. The first saw the U's rarely trouble the 'Ricay keeper with Delando Smith's bar rattling shot the U's best chance. At the other end Paul Nicholls was on fine form making sure that it was all level at half time with several brilliant blocks. The Yellows sprung in to action in the second half with the substitution of Billy Dunn and Dean Palmer for Adam Wilde and Jack Smith. Seconds later Dunn was flicking on Gavin Heeroo's free-kick and putting the U's in front. Debutant Danny Webb then pounced on a rebound from a Karl Murray shot to put Sutton two goals to the good. Billericay did manage to pull a goal back when a cross from the left wing unfortunately dropped in at the back post. However, Gavin McCallum put the result beyond doubt when he broke through and placed an exquisite curling shot in to the top right hand corner.

Team: P Nicholls, J Smith (D Palmer), K El-Salahi, C Collins, A Bray, D Smith (M Hann), G Heeroo, K Murray, G McCallum, D Webb, A Wilde (B Dunn). Subs (not used): S West, S McKimm, C Dundas, D Bracken.

Goals: Dunn (56), Webb (73), McCallum (84)

Billericay: J Buckfield, N Marron, A Dumas, L Duncan, T Cole, S Heffer, S Ferguson, L Hunter (S Henry), J Flack (J Dormer), B Bricknell, D Wareham. Subs (not used): R Worster, H Chatting, J West, S Keys.

Goals: Wareham (78)
