2008/09 MATCH REPORTS

2008/09 Reports:
U’s v Staines Town (07/02/09)

Final score: 1-3

The U's looked to upset the apple cart by taking three points off of Staines, whose only loss at home in the league so far was at the hands of Dover. Sutton got off on the right foot when Craig Dundas managed to get down the right wing to send in a low cross which David Hughes directed in to the far corner of the net. The U's then forged another couple of openings from long range when Dundas himself fired a ferocious shot just wide and Jon Munday saw his effort tipped over the bar. The Swans soon found themselves back on level terms and by the end of the half had pushed their noses in front. Sutton looked for the equaliser in the second period but could not create enough decent opportunities. Gavin McCallum came closest for the U's when a curling shot forced a good save from the 'keeper and he was then narrowly beaten to the rebound. At the other end Paul Nicholls had managed to restrict the score line with a string of one on one saves but even his heroics couldn't stop Staines from adding one more to their total.

U’s v Maidstone United (14/02/09)

Final score: 2-2

After a goal in each half from Gavin McCallum the U's looked like they had the points in the bag and even had chances to extend their lead. The match pivoted though when Maidstone were given a penalty when a 'Stones player crashed the ball into a turning Tim Bond's arm. Maidstone began to put the pressure on and three minutes from time they pulled level.

U’s v Tonbridge Angels (21/02/09)

Final score: 3-1

On a fine Saturday afternoon the U's travelled to Tonbridge to try and boost their push for the playoffs with a much needed away win. After a short delay due to an incident involving both benches, which saw Paul Doswell ordered from the pitch, Sutton got a lucky lead. As the end of the first half approached an unfortunate Tonbridge defender got just enough on a header to divert it pass his own 'keeper. Sutton came out brighter in the second half and were rewarded for their play when Gavin McCallum cut in from the left, made his way along the bye line and then found Craig Dundas with his pull back pass. Dundas took the opportunity well and fired McCallum's pass into the net. Minutes later McCallum made it three as he once again surged into the box, side stepped his marker and sent a curling shot into the bottom corner. Tonbridge did get a consolation goal when Leon Legge found himself unmarked in the box to cancel out his earlier own goal.

U’s v Tooting & Mitcham (24/02/09)

Final score: 0-0

For only the second time this season the U's played out a nil-nil draw. Sutton probably edged the possession throughout and did actually force the opposing 'keeper to make a couple of saves, but neither team looked like they were ever really going to take the lead. In the end a draw was probably a fair result as the U's just couldn't break down the well marshalled Tooting defence who soaked up pretty much every long ball.

Team: P Nicholls, K El-Salahi, O Lubwama, C Collins, D Ebsworth, M Hann, C Dundas, S McKimm, D.Hughes, C Eribenne (B Dunn), G McCallum . Subs (not used): C Ottaway, G Heeroo, B Graham, S West.

Tooting: McEntegart, Hamlin, Howell, Goode, J Vines, Hartburn, Pitterson, York, P Vines, Marshall, Pinnock. Subs: Watts, Tiesse, Crawley, Howar.

U’s v Harrow Borough (28/02/09)

Final score: 2-2

Just like the Maidstone game two weeks ago Sutton couldn't hold on to their lead once they'd got their noses in front. After a first minute save from a long range effort Sutton increasingly began to threaten the Harrow goal. Unfortunately Matt Hann, Gavin McCallum and Chukki Eribenne were either denied by the 'keeper or on the occasion when they did beat him the woodwork intervened. Harrow kicked off the second half very much like the first and only three minutes into the second period had expired when a cross come shot from the left wing looped in over Paul Nicholls. Sutton bounced straight back though when Bentley Graham netted his first senior goal with a well placed shot from the edge of the area. The U's then took the lead when Matt Hann managed to beat a defender to a high ball and sent his header over the stranded 'keeper. However with only minutes left on the clock a Harrow corner was fumbled by Nicholls and a grateful Boro player headed home to take a share of the points.

Team: P Nicholls, K El-Salahi, O Lubwama, C Collins, D Ebsworth, M Hann (S West), B Graham, S McKimm, D.Hughes, C Eribenne (B Dunn), G McCallum . Subs (not used): C Ottaway, G Heeroo.

Goals: Graham (52), Hann (72)

Harrow: A Baptiste, L Hall, R Watts, W Walters (S Dahl), D Leech, D Smith (M Jones), J Fraser, D McGonigle, D Clarke, G Noel, J Constant (D Fenton). Subs (not used): W Whitely, K Williams.

Goals: Clarke (48), McGonigle (86)
