2008/09 MATCH REPORTS

2008/09 Reports:
U’s v Heybridge Swifts (07/03/09)

Final score: 2-0

With two new signings going straight in to the starting eleven and another on the bench Sutton were a slightly changed side. Matt Hann got the game off on the right foot when he crashed a shot from outside of the box onto the crossbar. Then when Gavin McCallum caught the Heybridge 'keeper taking too much time on a back pass, Laurent Hamici pounced on the rebound and, from an almost impossible angle, put the ball in off the far post. Heybridge didn't really trouble Paul Nicholls at all during the first half, but for the remainder of the period Sutton couldn't create the chances to stretch their lead. After the break Craig Dundas latched on to a McCallum through ball and then proceeded to increase the margin. Dundas also had the a couple of chances to add to his tally but the 'keeper did well to save and then narrow the angle respectively.

U’s v Boreham Wood (10/03/09)

Final score: 3-1

Sutton finally fulfilled their away fixture against Boreham on the third attempt and it didn't start well. After only 8 minutes the U's found themselves behind from the penalty spot after Oscar Lubwama brought down a Boreham player in the box. After finally settling down, it took two keeping errors to gift Sutton the lead. Laurent Hamici benefited from the first mistake as the 'keeper missed a punch which allowed him to make it two in two games. After being brought on in the second half Chukki Eribenne then pounced on another foul up when the unfortunate net minder dropped a corner inside the six yard box. Eribenne didn't need an invite to finish and duly slotted home. The final goal was the pick of the bunch as Gavin McCallum ran on to a brilliant Eribenne flick on and smartly lifted the ball beyond the reach of the 'keeper and into the far corner.

Team: P Nicholls, O Lubwama, C Collins, K El-Salahi, D Ebsworth, C Dundas, D Hughes, S McKimm (C Eribenne), K McIntosh (B Graham), G McCallum, L Hamici (B Chattaway). Subs (not used): S West, S Patterson-Bohner.

U’s v Ashford Town, Middx (14/03/09)

Final score: 1-2

After being unbeaten in their last six games the U's travelled to Ashford with high hopes of continuing that run. Sutton started the brighter of the two teams but after initially having a good spell seemed to switch off and a well hit volley gave Ashford the lead. Sutton leveled the game in second half when David Hughes struck a low shot, that the 'keeper failed to stop, after cutting in from the right wing. The momentum swung back in the home team's favour minutes later as they managed to head home from a corner. But no matter how Sutton tried they couldn't find the equaliser.

U’s v Boreham Wood (21/03/09)

Final score: 1-1

After last weekend's disappointing result away to Ashford it looked like the U's would be frustrated again as they continued to try and stake a claim for a playoff spot. The first half was largely forgettable with the only points of note being a trip on Simon Jackson in the box that went unnoticed and a shot from Craig Dundas that couldn't beat the 'keeper. After being gifted two goals at Boreham eleven days ago, it seemed almost certain that someone would benefit from another gaff. However, this time Boreham were to be gifted the opening goal as debutant Kameron Abbassi beat Nicholls to score in his own net. The U's desperately tried to create opportunities to level the game but in the end it was a clearance from the six yard box that rebounded off Craig Dundas's knee that gave the yellows a vital last gasp point.

Team: P Nicholls, K Abbassi, C Collins, K El-Salahi, B Chattaway (L Hamici), C Dundas, D Hughes, K McIntosh (D Palmer), G McCallum, C Eribenne (B Graham), S Jackson. Subs (not used): T Bond, S McKimm.

U’s v Harrow Borough (24/03/09)

Final score: 0-0

On a cold and eventually wet evening the U's just couldn't find a way to break through the barrier in front of Harrow's goal.Gavin McCallum and Craig Dundas were both causing a nuisance to the Boro defence and it was to Dundas that the best chance of the game fell to. David Hughes chased after a ball after pushing it around a defender and ended up one on one with the 'keeper with Dundas just to his left. Unselfishly Hughes played in Dundas, but Dundas couldn't produce the finish that the move deserved and blazed over the unguarded net.Harrow also had some good possession towards the end of the first half but could only fire long range efforts wide of the mark. The U's were just as frustrated in the second period as efforts from Chukki Eribenne and Karim El-Salahi were blocked and saved respectively.

U’s v Dover Athletic (28/03/09)

Final score: 0-6

On a day when Dover could be crowned champions nothing went the U's way. One-nil down at the half way point Sutton were still in a with a chance of salvaging something, but that idea was literally torn to shreds in the second half. With just two chances on goal and only one of those on target the Yellows could find no answer to the Whites's constant pressure. Congratulations Dover and good luck for next season.

U’s v Hendon (31/03/09)

Final score: 0-0

After the thrashing at the weekend the travelling U's support were hoping that the players would be out to restore some confidence and continue the push to stay in a play-off position. But for the third game on the trot the Yellows failed to trouble the opposing goalkeeper. It was a different story at the other end as Paul Nicholls was the main reason that Sutton came away with anything from the game. A couple of one on one saves in the first half and several more vital stops in the second underlined Nicholls's fine performance. The referee also showed the strength of his performance after his linesman had to point out that a player he had just booked had already recieved a yellow card earlier in the match, so now needed to be given his marching orders.

Team: P Nicholls, S Jackson, A Bray, T Bond, D Hughes, C Collins (D Phillips), K El-Salahi, C Eribenne (S West), C Dundas, D Palmer, G McCallum (B Dunn). Subs (not used): D Ebsworth, L Hamici.
