2009/10 MATCH REPORTS

2009/10 Reports:
Basingstoke Town v U's (11/07/09)

Final score: 1-1

The U's got their pre-season fixtures off to a start with an away trip to Basingstoke. The first half saw Basingstoke have the majority of possession, but chances at either end were few and far between. The second half substitutions saw the introduction of Matt Hann whose runs at the 'Stoke defence started to create openings. Unsurprisingly it was Hann's run into the box that saw a clumsy challenge punished with a penalty. Up stepped Kenny Beaney, who calmly placed the ball into the net. The other U's subs then also started to click, which resulted in several good, flowing moves. Unfortunately the U's were not to get the win as a cross from the right wing deflected off Jason Goodliffe and past Kevin Scriven.

Winchester City v U's (15/07/09)

Final score: 0-0

The U's travelled to Winchester and, with several trialists still looking to impress Paul Doswell, could only manage a draw. Team: Porter (Mott), Adams, Alan Bray (Prince), Kenny Beaney (John-Paul), Justyn Roberts (Otto), Sam Stannard, Ebenezer, Worrell (Stefan Payne), Billy Dunn (Laurent Hamici), Danny Phillips, Billy Chattaway

Final score: 2-2

Sutton came from two goals down to claim an excellent draw against Blue Square South opposition. The Hawks went ahead right at the start of the first half and then added to their tally ten minutes into the second. But the U's fought back, firstly Stefan Payne latched onto Laurent Hamici's inch perfect cross to slide the ball past the 'keeper and then with under five minutes to play James Hawes found himself clear of the defence with enough time to slot the ball home.

Team: K Scriven, K El-Salahi (Stefan Payne), James Hawes, Sonny Cobbs, Jason Goodliffe, Justyn Roberts, Matt Hann, Danny Phillips (Billy Chattaway), Bradley Woods-Garness (Steve McKimm), Kenny Beaney (Alan Bray), Laurent Hamici.

U's v Crystal Palace (25/07/09)

Final score: 0-2

After the midweek visit of Brentford the U's welcomed another league team to GGL. Palace looked like they might turn the match into a rout after scoring in the third minute but the U's buckled down and began to contain the Championship side. In fact it wasn't until five minutes before the end that the Eagles swooped on a poor back pass to put the result beyond doubt.

Team: K Scriven (G Porter), B Hawes (S Stannard), A Bray, K El-Salahi, J Goodliffe (Y Oke), J Roberts (B Woods-Garness), M Hann (S Payne), K Beaney, B Dunn (L Hamici), S Cobbs (D Phillips), B Chattaway.

Dulwich Hamlet v U's (01/08/09)

Final score: 3-3

On a miserable August afternoon the U's played catch up to a useful Dulwich side. With a score line of three a piece you might think that the game was an entertaining one, however, none of the goals scored on the day where particularly memorable. Two of Dulwich's coming from defensive mistakes by Sutton and the other looked like the player brought the ball down with his hand before beating Kevin Scriven with a tame shot. Sutton were also gifted their tallies, firstly Stefan Payne scored from the spot after Kenny Beaney was brought down from behind in the box. Laurent Hamici then squeezed the ball through the keeper's hands from a very tight angle and finally, former U Dean Palmer deflected in Billy Dunn's low drive to conclude the scoring.

Team: K Scriven, B Hawes, A Bray (B Chattaway), K Beaney, K El-Salahi (S Stannard), J Roberts, A Joseph (E Masabe), D Phillips, M Richardson (L Hamici), S Payne (B Dunn), J Hawes.

Goals: Payne (37 pen), Hamici(59), Palmer (88 og).

Met Police v U's (08/08/09)

Final score: 2-2

Sporting their new home strip Sutton stamped their authority on the game early and by the time that Sonny Cobbs connected with a Kenny Beaney free-kick the U's had already had two chances cleared off the line and forced the 'keeper into several good saves. After the break the introduction of Anthony Joseph on the right wing saw the U's push on again and it was his cross that was met by Sam Gargan to extend Sutton's lead. But from then on the Blues began to find their feet and within the space of a few minutes the game was level. Sutton did have a couple of chances to restore their lead but Gargan could not reproduce his earlier header and Billy Dunn was unfortunate that the ball did not bounce for him after former U, Mo Maan had charged out of his goal.

Team: K Scriven, B Hawes (S Stannard), B Chattaway, S Cobbs, J Goodliffe, K El-Salahi (J Roberts), M Hann (A Joseph), S Gargan, S Payne (B Dunn), K Beaney, J Hawes (D Phillips).

Goals: Cobbs (37), Gargan (50)

U's v Tottenham Hotspur XI (11/08/09)

Final score: 2-1

Clive Allen's academy team brought a little piece of the Premiership to GGL and in return the U's put on a splendid second half performance. Sutton initially went behind in the first half to a header from a Belgian Youth International but Kevin Scriven was rarely tested. In the second half the U's continued the streak of four consecutive headed goals (two at Met Police). The first saw Stefan Payne jump unchallenged to head in Matt Hann's free-kick and the second saw club captain, Jason Goodliffe, rise at the back post to head in Bentley Graham's cross. Spurs could've equalised late on but a superb goal-line clearance from Billy Chattaway denied the North Londoners a draw.

Team: K Scriven (P Smith), B Hawes (S Stannard), A Bray (B Chattaway), J Goodliffe, K El-Salahi (J Roberts), A Joseph (K Beaney), S Cobbs (M Hann), B Graham (E Masabe), D Phillips (B Woods-Garness), S Payne (B Dunn), S Gargan (S McKimm).

Goals: Payne (62), Goodliffe (77)

Spurs XI: L Butcher, N Byrne (C Ekim), S Cox, Kamo, A Blackwood, O Durojaiye, R Fredericks, D Parrett (J Nicholson), K Oyenuga (Zongo), J Bostock (T Carroll), P-J M’Poku Ebunge (P McBride).

Goals: M’Poku Ebunge (30)
