Final score: 4-0 The U's got the new season off to a good start with Stefan Payne crowning his competitive debut for the club with a superb hat-trick. Payne got his first after picking the ball up on the left wing, cutting back inside his marker before curling an exquisite shot into the far corner. Sam Gargan, another competitive debutant, also got his name on the score sheet when his low free kick rocketed past the keeper. At two - nil down Margate did themselves no favours when their number seven said something to the ref which prompted a straight red from the official. After the break Payne completed his trio of goals, the first saw him burst through and then calmly slot the ball beyond the 'keepers reach. Margate then literally handed the young striker a chance for the 'trick when the Gate skipper decided to punch a Graham Bentley cross away from Sam Gargan's head. Payne duly stepped up, dispatched the spot kick and claimed the match ball and the man of the match award as well. Horsham took the lead seven minutes before the break and no matter how hard they tried the U's could not find an equaliser. Sutton's cause was not helped on the night by a referee who almost continuously had his whistle in his mouth and ended up cautioning eleven players and sending off a member of the Horsham staff. Stefan Payne almost got the U's off to the perfect start when he burst through on three minutes, only to see his effort blocked by the 'keeper. Payne was involved in the U's opening goal, breaking through on the right wing, laying it back to Danny Phillips who in turn tee-d up Sam Gargan to shoot low to the keeper's left and into the net. After the break Hendon came to the fore and were soon on level terms and looked the more likely to go on and grab all three points. However with very little of injury time remaining Gargan found the ball at his feet in the box, after a pass from Sonny Cobbs, and calmly used the outside of his right foot to put the ball into the far corner.
